The Coach House - ideal venue

With the Coach House having had its recent facelift, it has become a really nice, versatile venue for all sorts of functions and occasions. We have a few snaps of the interior taken during a function for some 60 people. Click on this link for a series of shots of the interior. The spaces comprising the Coach House are an ENTRANCE HALL, a BAR/LOUNGE, KITCHEN, men's and women's TOILETS, a COVERED, ENCLOSED DECK and, beyond the deck, the CLOSE LAWN ideal as a braai and outside functions area - large enough to accommodate a large marquee. Children's playground equipment is also on the Close.

Old Boy cricketers coming to the fore

Precocious innings from three

OLD BOYS TO WATCH

Amongst our Old Boys, Glen Addicott this week scored 61 for the KZN Dolphins (versus the Lions - on the back of his 70 a couple of weeks ago), Bradley Moses 102 vs Border for KZN Inland while Matthew Hulett helped win the game against Border on Sunday 14 November. The KZN Cricket Union press release (16 November) reads as follows:

"Matthew Hulett struck an unbeaten 119 as KwaZulu-Natal beat Border by three wickets on the Duckworth Lewis method in a CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge match at the Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Sunday.
Chasing 213 for victory from 27 overs, KZN reached their target with five balls remaining as they ended on 213 for seven.  The victory was set up by a fourth wicket partnership of 85 between Hulett and Abdul Haq Razak with the latter smashing 47 from 32 balls. His innings included one four and three sixes.
Hulett faced 74 balls for his match-winning knock that included seven fours and seven sixes.
Border made 200 for two from 27 overs after being put into bat before rain brought an end to their innings.

KZN pick up four points for their victory."

Another string of firsts for Guy Brownlee

What an office he works in!

Last year we ran a story on Old Boy, Guy Brownlee (1978), piloting an Emirates A330 into Durban for the first time when that airline opened their Dubai / Durban schedule.

A year later, Guy (in the driver's seat on the left) is going higher, flying further, piloting bigger - as he made his first A380 flight across the Atlantic from Dubai to Toronto, this time in command of an Airbus A380-861 - Emirates A6-EDM. With room for more passengers than there are high-school boys and staff at his old school, this is the stuff of which schoolboy dreams are made. There were about 480 passengers who experienced Guy's first training flight - after the many hours he spent in the simulator at Dubai Airport.

Guy writes: "As you gathered I am back from my first training flight to Toronto, I have two Londons, a BKK / HKG and a Jeddah to do and I will be finished. It was our latest aircraft, it had only done the flight test, a delivery to Dubai and a Paris before I laid my grubby paws on it! Really easy to fly, the wing root is over 9' thick (2.74m) and with 80m wingspan the ground effect on landing is enormous, so you can control the touchdown down to the last few inches, resulting in a good landing (every time I am told).

It's amazing the bigger they get the easier they are to fly, seems crazy even at this stage in my career. That's why our local cadets who basically fly the 330 or 777 as their first a/c after only having about 200 hours do so well. Can't stall, can't put on more than 60 degrees of bank, can't pitch up more than 25 degrees etc!

The cockpit has such great features besides the cameras which allow us to see everywhere in the a/c for this damn safety threat deal! Showers, bars, it's got everything, but so did the 747 when it first arrived!

We look off here with a weight of 565tons and landed 13 hours later at 374 tons, thats more than a fully loaded A345! Approach speed was 138 kts." (That's 256 km/h)

Congratulations Guy! Fly safely. 1970s Old Boy, Laurence Gien, comments: "Amazing Guy, drivin da best bus in town!" and Gaylord Hoffmann, "How high can you go...good one Guy....."

PS. Please try to land at Pietermaritzburg so you can take us all for a flip.

PHOTOS: 2 (below) the flight deck of the A380-861; 3. The log showing that there are only 75 hours on the clock of this plane - which had its first flight on 4 June 2010 - essentially brand new; 4. A view forward from the tail fin - Guy claims the A380 has more cameras than the Webmaster. Mmm, by one or two, perhaps.

North American reunion

Thanks for the news from Old Boys

I writing to you in terms of a very peculiar old boy reunion which took place in the United States recently. Siyabonga Africa (who attended the school from 1995 to 2001 - though never matriculated there) and Dane Finch (class of 2003) met up in Bloomington, Indiana for a Thai meal and to catch up on each others lives. These two have remained friends since their days in SCC and never thought in their wildest dreams they would be enjoying some ethnic dishes in the United States. Siyabonga is currently a Ford Foundation fellow studying for his masters degree in New Media at Indiana University's Bloomington campus and Dane Finch is running his own successful company and conducting augmentative technologies at the University of South Carolina.

I hope this post makes it into the Old Boys chronicles and my best regards to the school that had a large influence on the man I am today.

Old Boy's Dinner and Old Boys' Day

Large numbers attend both events

1

AFTER THE OPENING GRACE said by Allen van Blerk in the absence of Wayne Naidoo, MC Craig McCord introduced the First XV who filed into the Indoor Centre to receive their jersies for the Fist XV game tomorrow. Shaun Quin then introduced the guest speaker, Principal, Ronnie Kuhn.

Kuhn is to retire at the end of the year and his fund of cricket and rugby anecdotes accumulated over the years had the audience in stitches. Ronnie concluded that his success was attributed to the integrity of the Board. He singled out Mr Alan Fourie for special mention for his role in the past and his wish that Fourie would never retire from the Board. Together they had overseen the growth in the College over the past 20 years to a school which has a projected growth of some 700 boys in the school.

He singled out and thanked the SA ANC government for providing the best education marketing tools the College could ever have wished for.

He finished on a note that his dream was for all Old Boys to send their sons to the College, and announced the launch of a fund to give Bursaries to deserving boys, based on a R100.00 per-month-for-life-pledge - which would be started this evening.

He received a long standing ovation.

After lamenting the fact that there was no auctioneer this evening, Craig McCord cast around for volunteers. Under cover of a jacket, he presented the auctioneer for the evening - none other that visitor from Nigeria, Mr Roger "varoooooom" Sheppard who flew in for the weekend. And did Roger do his job! R30000 for the glass which was raised by the two tables comprising the Class of 1990.

Well done to Gill Sheppard and her crew comprising Collette McCord and her helpers on a fabulous evening for 170 Old Boys who gathered for time of wonderful camaraderie. Travel home safely. It was most gratifying to see 32 members of the class of 1990 present amongst whom was Etienne Fynn (are you reading this Kearsney College?). Furthest flung Old Boys was Franco Santorelli who flew in from Washington DC. There were also nine members of the Class of 1960 - 50th reuinion - with two of their number flying from the UK for this event.

A couple of hundred Old Boys turned up to the rugby on Saturday afternoon and then went to the Coach House afterwards to watch the rugby from Cardiff.

A festive time was had by all.

Tarr to resurface City Council

Old Boy in the Mayoral seat again

OLD BOY, MIKE TARR, IS THE CITY'S CHOICE as Mayor of Pietermaritzburg as of Thursday 25 March 2010. Mike (Class of 1958) is the son of Dr Ashton Tarr, himself an Old Boy of the College and founder member of the 1979 Board of Governors - who was himself Mayor in 1975 and 1976.

Hot on the heels of the apparent mismanagement of the City by the former administration, the critical members of which were "recalled", Mike Tarr is described in one of the local newspapers (Witness 2010 03 26) as "a new sherriff in town". After St Charles College, Mike's professional life started at the University of Natal in the Agricultural Economics Department, and was originally a Progressive Federal Party (PFP) MPC for Maritzburg South, who later joined the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and then the ANC.

"The Mercury" newspaper writes (2010 03 26): "Almost 35 years after his father was appointed mayor of Msunduzi, the ANC's Mike Tarr took over the hot seat on Thursday following several days of speculation about the post.

His appointment came after the provincial government placed the municipality under the administration of Johann Mettler as service delivery and local economic development was on the brink of collapse due to maladministration.

Tarr, who vividly recalls the days when his father, Ashton Tarr, was the mayor of Pietermaritzburg said it was "quite an honour" but there were several challenges ahead of him and the rest of the newly elected team.

"We are going to be absolutely transparent, no more closed meetings... everything will be absolutely according to the letter," said Tarr."

The St Charles College web site wishes Mike Tarr all the best on the difficult road ahead.

Old Boys' Newsletters can be obtained from info@sccoldboys.co.za.

Established in July 1875, St Charles College has, understandably, had a varied and fascinating past. Originally established in Loop Street in the City of Pietermaritzburg as a Roman Catholic grammar school in the care of the priests of the Order of Mary Immaculate, the School was sold to the Marist Brothers in 1912. Growth was so substantial that 14 years later it was necessary to move the College to Scottsville. Undergoing rapid expansion, particularly in the 1950s, the future of St Charles was seemingly assured until, with declining interest in the Catholic Church for religious vocations, the College almost closed down in 1978. It was saved by the eleventh-hour intervention of a small group of committed Old Boys who worked tirelessly to re-establish the College as an educational institution of standing, producing a non-denominational school with a secular Headmaster. From those shaky beginnings with 183 boys in 1979 the growth of St Charles in stature and numbers sees it today as an important boys' school in South Africa.

Read all about St Charles College in the coffee-table book, "Together, Standing Tall'.

"Together, Standing Tall" is available from St Charles College at R228.00 + registered postage and packing (approx R40.00 in South Africa). Call Barbara Spencer on +27 (0)33 386 8235.

This lavishly illustrated coffee-table book (nearly 450 in colour and black and white illustrations) traces the development of the College from its first day to its near closure in 1978. It then follows the renaissance of the College in the care of a Board of Governors, comprising mainly Old Boys, under the Chairmanship of the late Des White. The numbers at the non-denominational St Charles College have grown to over 500 in the past 23 years. Des White, the modern-day founder of St Charles, was as irrepressible in 1979 as the original founder, the ambitious Bishop Charles Jolivet, was in 1875 - both would be very proud of their College.
